Candle care

A better burn begins with a little care.

A few simple habits can help your candle burn more evenly, perform as intended, and stay safer in the home. Always follow the instructions provided with your specific candle.

Before you light

Start clean. Start trimmed.

Good candle care begins before the match is struck. Keep the wax surface clear, check the wick, and give the candle a stable place to burn.

01

Trim the wick

Before each burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. A properly trimmed wick helps keep the flame more controlled and can reduce excess soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning.

02

Keep the wax clear

Remove wick trimmings, matches, or other debris from the wax before lighting. Extra material in the melt pool can become additional fuel.

03

Give the first burn time

Allow the wax pool time to develop broadly across the surface on the first burn. This helps encourage a more even burn pattern on later uses—without exceeding the candle’s recommended burn time.

04

Choose the right spot

Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, fans, open windows, children, pets, and anything that can catch fire.

05

Mind the burn time

Follow the burn-time guidance provided with your candle. As a general rule, avoid burning a candle longer than four hours at a time and allow it to cool fully before relighting.

06

Know when to stop

Discontinue use when about ½ inch of wax remains in the container. Never use water to extinguish a candle, and do not move the vessel while the wax is hot or liquid.

Most important

Burn within sight.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep, and keep the flame well away from combustible materials.

A few final notes

Let the candle tell you when something needs attention.

If the flame becomes unusually high, repeatedly flickers, or begins producing visible smoke, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts or debris before relighting.

If the vessel becomes excessively hot, extinguish the candle and allow it to cool completely before handling. Never touch or move a hot candle vessel.

If product-specific instructions differ from this general guide, follow the instructions supplied with the candle.
